About Sustainable House Day
Sustainable House Day is a unique event that gives people the chance to view homes in their local communities and access practical information on sustainable living directly from homeowners themselves. The event promotes peer-to-peer advice on how to make your home cheaper to run, more comfortable to live in and lighten your environmental footprint.
Last year there were 29,000 visits to the 206 homes open across Australia. We had an increase of 68% in visitor numbers compare to the previous year and the event successfully garnered a significant level of media interest across television, radio, print and online publications.
Over 55% of people attended Sustainable House Day for the first time and 63% of attendees were not members of any sustainability networks prior to the event making Sustainable House Day’s reach critical in reaching a new audience of homeowners.
Sustainable House Day focuses media attention on creating sustainable homes with extensive coverage across radio, print and online. Ongoing communications with participants occurs throughout the year through monthly e-bulletins and social media.
Sustainable House Day - making an impact
Sustainable House Day has proven impact. Results from a post-event survey conducted the CRC for Low Carbon Living showed that within three weeks of the event:
- 26% had already taken action and implemented sustainable design and/or features in their homes
- 62% were planning to include sustainable design and/or features in the near future to their homes
- 82% of participants have already had face to face conversations with family and friends sharing their experience and learning from SHD
