Advocating for our community

The 2020 Eden-Monaro by-election presents Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council with an opportunity to encourage candidates to consider offering their support for a range of important projects to the people of Queanbeyan-Palerang.

The following list of projects has been submitted to each of the candidates. The projects are categorised as: Community, Economy, Culture, Recreation, Environment and Transport.

Nerriga Road Freight Corridor - South Coast-Canberra (BWD)

Council is currently working on the third of four stages of an upgrade to Nerriga Road. Three stages have involved constructing new sections of road to replace unsealed sections. The fourth stage will involve a new intersection with Kings Highway. The 6-7km section towards Nerriga Village, then from the quarry through to Oallen Ford requires reconstruction.

Cooma Street Commuter Corridor (QBN)

There are two projects involving Cooma Street. The first is to realign and duplicate between Southbar Road and Edwin Land Parkway. This section includes one of the most commonly complained about intersections in Queanbeyan - the intersection with Barracks Flat Drive. 

The second project involves refurbishing the well-worn Cooma Street between Southbar Road and Glebe Avenue. This project would also replace and tree line the centre median.

Braidwood car park (BWD)

Parking in the main street of Braidwood is often at a premium, especially during peak tourist periods. This means many potential customers for Braidwood’s small businesses don’t stop in the town during their travel. This project would utilise part of the Council depot site to create a new car park with amenities, open up pedestrian access to Wallace Street, with vehicle access from Duncan Street.

Foxlow Bridge (CF)

This project would reinstate the Allan Truss heritage bridge for local and forestry freight and create flood free access for residents.

Cooma Road Tourist corridor (BWD/CF)

Cooma Road could be a safer tourist route if 22.5km of road was realigned and sealed between Braidwood and Captains Flat.

Monaro Street (QBN)

Work to improve Monaro Street between Crawford Street and the Queens Bridge would activate Queanbeyan’s main street, generate  movement of people around the CBD, widen footpaths, replace road paving, increase plantings, and install new lighting.

Morisset Street car park (QBN)

To enhance Queanbeyan’s car parking options, Council proposes to construct a 500 space multi-storey car park and renovate the remaining public domain and laneway connectors to increase business activation.

Shared Path linking Wallace Street and the Braidwood Services Club (BWD)

A 2.5m wide shared path 660m in length.

Shared Path on Majara Street linking Gibraltar Street and Kings Highway (BGD) 

A 2.5m wide shared path 720m in length.

Wallace Street renovation (BWD)

Rehabilitation of the main street of heritage-listed Braidwood to improve drainage, add tree protection and further paving.

Cooma Street traffic signals and pedestrian crossing (QBN)

Installation of traffic signals to ensure school children can safely cross busy Cooma Street at the intersection with Glebe Avenue. The project would also include relocation of one of the gates to the Queanbeyan Showground.

Honeysuckle Creek Bridge (MC)

Retain the existing heritage granite headwalls, and build a new bridge on Majors Creek Road to improve school bus access and access to the mine.

Pedestrian bridge over Monkittee Creek on Kings Highway (BWD)

Install a pedestrian bridge to safely separate pedestrians from Kings Highway traffic on the entry to Braidwood.

Queanbeyan River Platypus Viewing (QBN)

Create a platypus viewing platform near the Queanbeyan suspension bridge.

Indoor Sports Centre at Regional Sports Complex (QBN)

As part of the Stage 2 of the Regional Sports Complex at Jerrabomberra, Council plans to construct a new indoor sports facility comprising four courts, amenities, allied health and support rooms. The $20m Stage 1 playing fields will be completed for the 2022 season.

Braidwood Pool (BWD)

Realign and reconstruct a six-lane 25m heated outdoor pool in Braidwood. The project forms stage 2 of a current upgrade. Stage 1 upgrades include retiling the pool, refurbishing changerooms and improving heating.

New Bungendore Pool (BGD)

Design and construct an eight-lane 25m heated outdoor pool to be included at the new Bungendore Sports Hub which is expected to commence construction in late 2020.

Existing Bungendore Pool (BGD)

Provide solar panel heating to the existing Bungendore Pool

River Botanic Garden (QBN)

As part of Stage 8 of the Queanbeyan CBD Spatial Master Plan, this project would involve concept design and feasibility study. The botanic garden would add to Council’s place plan and aim to generate international engagement.

Braidwood Skate Park (BWD) 

Construct a skate park at the Braidwood Recreation Ground.

Queanbeyan River Walk, West (QBN) 

Complete the shared path river walk on the western side of Queanbeyan River from Dane Street to River Drive.

Queanbeyan River Walk, East (QBN)

Complete the river walk loop on the eastern side of Queanbeyan River from the Ellerton Drive bridge along golf course corridor to the suspension bridge.

Bungendore Park Upgrade (BGD)

Upgrading Bungendore’s ageing, and only significant, playground.

Wright Park (QBN)

Wright Park hosts Little Athletics, school athletics carnivals, cricket, soccer and rugby league. The facility needs a new amenities building.

Steve Mauger Oval and Halloran Drive Oval lighting (QBN)

Both ovals are used extensively by local junior AFL but lack oval flood lighting, resulting in limited daylight hours for training and reduced safety and security.

‘Treehouse’ Community Hub (QBN)

Refurbish the former Treehouse family day care centre to create a new community hub.

Seniors Centre (QBN)

Convert the Queanbeyan Visitor Information Centre into a dedicated Seniors Centre when visitor information services relocate to the future Queanbeyan Civic and Cultural Precinct.

South Jerra Innovation Hub (QBN)

Construct an innovation hub for research and development, business start-up, and pathway programs into defence, space, energy, technology, and renewables at the new business park cluster.

Smart Hubs (BGD and BWD) 

Establish smart hubs in Bungendore and Braidwood for co-work, online learning and business start ups.

Bungendore Sculpture Park (BGD)  

Develop a sculpture park in Bungendore.

Estimated cost: $1m  |  Funding required: $1m

Champions Walk (QBN)

Develop the Queanbeyan City of Champions walk to create a tourism attraction promoting Queanbeyan’s famous sporting champions.

Bicentennial Hall (QBN)

Construct an exhibition gallery to create integration with the future Queanbeyan Civic and Cultural Precinct and The Q theatre.

Braidwood Cultural Hub (BWD)

Refurbishment of the top floor of the Literary Institute building to create a cultural centre, ballroom, cinema and smart hub.

Bungendore Public Library (BGD)

Relocate the existing public library from school grounds into the Council building and establish a smart hub.

Estimated cost: $1.5m  |  Funding required: $1m

Braidwood Heritage Centre (BWD)

Establish a heritage centre in Braidwood.

Estimated cost: $2.3m  |  Funding required: $2.3m

Mobile Library (all areas)

Set up a second mobile library for access to remote areas of Queanbeyan-Palerang.

Local History Hub (BWD) 

Establish a heritage and local history hub for the region at the existing Braidwood Historical Museum.
