Australia’s best art quilters on show at The Q
Published on 05 February 2019
Miniature quilts by some of Australia’s most renowned art quilters will be on show at The Q exhibition space from 12 February to 9 March. Australia Wide Six is a juried exhibition showcasing 39 works by members of the Ozquilt Network.
Viewers are also invited to attend an artist talk on Saturday 2 March, facilitated by Ozquilt Network president Dianne Firth and featuring other local artists whose quilts are included in the exhibition.
At just 40 x 40 cm, each quilt is a miniature marvel of textile techniques and is a must see for art lovers and quilters alike. The exhibition demonstrates the scope and variety of stitched and layered textiles. Materials used range from cotton and silk to paper and plastic. Techniques include hand and machine stitching, digital printing, needle felting, gelatine printing, plant-dyeing, collage and painting. The works address many different themes with diverse interpretations and styles.
Australia Wide Six also features several local quilting celebrities. Representations of the landscape of Canberra and surrounds have a strong presence in the exhibition. Current president of the Ozquilt Network Dianne Firth depicts the memory of ancient ceremonies on Canberra’s riverbanks in her piece Kanberra #3. Also included are local creative duo Beth and Trevor Reid, whose work Tafoni references the honeycomb-like weathering of sandstone formations on our beloved South Coast. The region’s representatives are rounded out by Helen Grey, with her stunning work White Landscape.
The Ozquilt network exists to raise the profile and status of art quilters and art quilts in Australia and Australia Wide Six provides a taste to audiences of this rich and diverse medium. Entries are sought from all over Australia, and once the final selections have been made, the works spend up to two years travelling the country, bringing them to new audiences for all Australians to enjoy.
The presentation of this exhibition at The Q is supported by Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council.
