Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council is seeking feedback on priorities identified in the Draft QPRC Sports Facilities Strategic Plan.

The Sports Facilities Strategic Plan has been updated over the last twelve months to guide the use and delivery of current and future sporting facilities over the next twenty years.

‘We have a really strong and diverse sporting community in our region and we manage a lot of facilities that support local teams, junior sports and volunteers,’ Mayor Kenrick Winchester said.

‘We have an above average participation rate in organised sports and a higher than average young population in Queanbeyan-Palerang and so demand for more high-quality facilities in our region is continuing to grow.

‘It’s important to us to have grounds that support the growth and emerging talent of our sporting community.

‘We have worked with the QPRC Sports Council and local sporting groups to update the Draft QPRC Sports Facilities Strategic Plan with six broad strategies and a series of recommendations that reflect their wants and needs,’ he said.

‘The strategy reflects on the large increase in passive recreational pursuits. It is important that our facilities are accessible and suitable for the general community.’

The six strategies in the Draft QPRC Sports Facilities Strategic Plan include establishing sporting clusters and hubs, facility rationalisation, providing high level sporting opportunities, providing home facilities for all QPRC based clubs, providing accessible and equitably distributed unstructured recreational facilities throughout QPRC, and economic development through sport and recreation.

‘Each strategy has recommendations which aim to make sure all sporting needs are addressed and opportunities for recreation, health and well-being cover the whole community. Many in our community will be spending time with family over the summer and we are accepting comments for two months so that everyone has time to have a say,’ added Mayor Winchester.
