On Sunday 5 June from 10am-2pm Council is holding an open day at Mt Jerrabomberra for World Environment Day.

This year the theme is ‘Only One Earth’ and the open day at Mt Jerrabomberra is an opportunity for our community to learn more about, and help to protect, the natural environment right in their backyard.

‘So many of us have walked Mt Jerra and this open day is a great way for anyone to learn more about the plants and animals that call this place home,’ Mayor Kenrick Winchester said.

Council staff, Landcare and other community groups will be at the open day, sharing information about Mt Jerrabomberra as well as other projects in the LGA including NatureMapr.

‘These local guides are passionate about our environment and have so much knowledge to share, and I really encourage our community to go and listen to what they have to say.’

Council partnered with NatureMapr in 2021 with funding from Resilience NSW. Since the program launched, we have received more than 4000 new reports, and over 40 rare or threatened species have been identified in the Queanbeyan Palerang region. Staff will be available on the day to provide tips on how to use the mobile app.

Council is also running a Minecraft Sustainable Design Competition as part of World Environment Day.

Competitors aged 5-17 have until 30 May to build a sustainable building, park, landscape, town or other structure in Minecraft that reflects the 2022 World Environment Day theme. The submissions will be shown at a screening and awards night on 3 June.

There are four age groups and some fantastic prizes including snowplay passes at Corin Forest, EB games vouchers, and a $500 cash prize for the overall winner.
