Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council is seeking feedback on a lease agreement with Police Citizens Youth Club (PCYC) to enable them to operate in the Queanbeyan Indoor Sports Centre.

PCYC has a strong reputation for providing extensive programs to all ages in the community. Council has considered that the long-term financially sustainable delivery of youth and sporting programs will be best served by collaboration with PCYC.

A PCYC in Queanbeyan will offer a broad range of opportunities for the community in active, cultural and community programs. It has also committed to providing the current community programs and uses for the sports centre.

Specific activities that the PCYC will offer will be determined through community consultation and industry experience. PCYC operations will be guided by a committee including PCYC, Council and community members.

The benefits of a PCYC include:

  • Extended operating hours
  • A diverse range of activities and options for young people – sporting, creative, cultural, vocational
  • A broad range of options for all ages – sporting, creative, cultural
  • Intensive programs for young people at risk
  • Program delivered throughout the LGA
  • All PCYCs also provide a drop-in centre for young people

To enable this to happen, PCYC would take over all operations of the Queanbeyan Indoor Sports Centre.

Council will continue to operate and support the Youth Advisory Committee and programs for young people run by the Library, The Q and cultural arts areas including many grant funded youth-specific programs.

Council will consider the re-purposing of the AXIS Youth Centre and the surrounding buildings and may seek expressions of interest from community groups. Council has already received approaches to include a community hub and youth activity spaces.
