The main street of Queanbeyan now proudly boasts two new small retailers after Mayor Tim Overall launched the Queanbeyan Christmas Cave and Queanbeyan Lions Club Community Bookshop today.

The two stores are part of QPRC’s Places + Spaces initiative which aims to take

under-utilised spaces in the Queanbeyan CBD, including laneways, open spaces and empty shopfronts, and transform them into bustling community spaces.

The Christmas Cave is the brain child of both Deborah Olde and Susan Brinton. The shop stocks Christmas decorations, snow globes, Christmas trees, candles, wreaths and more.

“We have a large range of fantastic Christmas decoration ideas to bring some Christmas cheer to your home or workplace and get you in the holiday spirit,” said Deborah.

The community bookshop is a partnership between Peter Bray (QPRC Councillor) and the Lions Club of Queanbeyan. Peter Bray has provided thousands of books from his vast collection and from the great work he has done with previous charity book fairs.

Max Carrick, President of the Lions Club of Queanbeyan said the bookshop would be selling all sorts of wonderful books either for $1 or $2, with some better or more recent books selling for a little more.

“The bookshop will be staffed by Lions Club volunteers and other helpers and all money raised from sales will be returned to various charities in the Queanbeyan community,” said Max.

The two stores are located in adjoining shopfronts that have been made available by the Queanbeyan Leagues Club through QPRC’s Places + Spaces initiative.

“It’s great to see local business working with Council and community groups to revitalise parts of the Queanbeyan CBD and transform previously empty shopfronts into pop-up spaces for the Christmas period.

“I’d like to thank the Leagues Club for making the shops available to us and also thank the Christmas Cave and the Lions Club for getting on board,” Mayor Overall said.

The shops are located at 146 & 148 Monaro Street, Queanbeyan. The Christmas Cave will be open until 21 December or until sold out and the Queanbeyan Lions Club Community Bookshop will be open until mid-January.
