In early 2021, the QPRC Placemaking team applied for funding to upgrade two Monaro Street Laneways: Blacksmiths Lane and No Name Lane.
Taking recommendations and concepts outlined in the adopted 2019 Queanbeyan CBD Place Plan, the team developed these ideas and consulted with key landlords, business owners and laneway users.
The laneways have now been completely transformed with public art, lighting, seating, trees, plantings and new pavement surfaces.
No Name Lane
Laneway renovation work was completed in July with the laneway re-opening to the public. We have received lots of positive feedback and have enjoyed seeing photos shared by the community.
Unfortunately, some of the paint had not adhered properly to the facade and pavement surfaces, so the artist returned to reapply the paint.
Blacksmiths Lane
The renovation of Blacksmiths Lane is now complete and open to the public. While the temporary fencing around the entrance from behind The Q does detract from the finished work, the private land adjacent to the lane will be resurfaced by the property owner.
Project funding
Council was successful in securing $505,701 in funding from the NSW Government's Your High Street program to improve safety, amenity and functionality within these key pedestrian spaces. Your High Street grant program is for councils to support local business recovery, provide economic stimulus, and improve community safety and comfort.
This project was proudly funded by the NSW Government.
