An essential component of Council’s CBD Transformation Strategy, is the redevelopment of 257 Crawford Street, Council’s old administration building. The former administration building has been unoccupied since 2015, largely due to the significant cost required to replace the heating and cooling system. With 257 Crawford St unoccupied, staff have been housed in 11 buildings in the CBD.
Council agreed at the meeting held on 27 June 2018 meeting to proceed with the redevelopment of Queanbeyan Head Office at 257 Crawford St. The new building will be constructed at 257 Crawford Street and will be designed to adjoin The Q and Bicentennial Hall with an integrated foyer to link the three buildings.
The new office will be a five level 7,000-7,500m2 office to accommodate 200 staff allowing for 10% growth, and will include meeting rooms, a smart hub/co-work space, as well as additional lettable office space for 100 tenancy staff. The smart hub provides space for new business start-ups in an incubator environment, as well as space for agency staff to operate from Queanbeyan rather than the ACT for example, adding more workers into the CBD to activate the cafes and retail strip.
Council will take out a loan for the project, which will be paid for by merger savings, lease income and review of services. Council decided not to consider a special rate variation to service the debt for the head office.
