Captains Flat pool refurbishment

There has been ongoing concern about the condition of the Captains Flat Pool for several years. We have been working on a project to rehabilitate the pool and received funding from the NSW Government for leak rectification and improved disability access.

Specialist advice suggested providing a new hydraulic and filtration system with a balance tank in the deep end of the lap pool, retiling the toddler pool and applying a new layer of epoxy finish to the lap pool. The pool is leaking significantly, with various cracks throughout the pool structure. We estimate that water loss is approximately 66,463 litres of water per 24-hours.

We called for tenders and three potential contractors attended the pre-tender meeting on site. No tenders were received, and staff met with the remaining contractors to discuss the project. These contractors believed that the pool was past its use-by date and should be condemned. One contractor provided a price to complete the work, which was significantly over budget, and they would not guarantee the leaking issue would not arise again, due to the age of the pool and declining infrastructure.

Given the grant funding timelines and uncertainty over the success of a remediation project, we will be seeking approval from the funding body to redirect the grant to another infrastructure project within Captains Flat. If this is possible, we will be seeking community input into what project should be prioritised.

While we hope to redirect the grant funding, we have allocated funding of $22,775 to engage a qualified consultant to investigate the feasibility of remediation of the pool and to prepare a full scope of works and planning for a long-term solution.
