  • Completion Date02 February 2026
Wombat crossing completed in 2022 on Lowe Street Queanbeyan

The project involves the construction of approximately 140 metres of a 3 metre-wide shared path. There will also be a new wombat crossing installed. The existing crossing will be relocated along with associated street lighting and pedestrian safety fencing. These improvements aim to enhance safety and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists, particularly students travelling to and from nearby schools.

Why the Upgrade?

Traffic congestion and safety concerns around Jerrabomberra Public School have been long-standing issues, particularly during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up periods. The opening of Jerrabomberra High School further increased pedestrian activity and vehicle movements along Firethorn Place and Coachwood Avenue. Following consultation with NSW Police, Transport for NSW, and the Local Traffic Committee, several improvements were identified to better manage traffic, enhance pedestrian safety, and improve access for students walking and riding to school.

What’s Changing?

The project will deliver several important safety and connectivity upgrades, including:

  • Construction of the missing shared-path connections
  • Installation of a raised pedestrian crossing with compliant street lighting
  • Relocation of the existing children’s crossing closer to the school entrance
  • Installation of additional pedestrian safety fencing

Construction Timeline and Traffic Impacts

To minimise disruption to students, parents, and the wider community, construction will occur during the school summer term break. Works are scheduled to begin on 5 January 2026 and be completed by 31 January 2026.

During this period

  • Minor traffic delays may be experienced
  • Partial lane closures will be required along Firethorn Place
  • Local resident access will be maintained

These temporary measures are necessary to safely construct the new raised pedestrian crossing and related upgrades. Motorist are urged to follow signage.

The project is fund by the NSW State Government - Transport for NSW - Get NSW Active program.
