Contractors have begun installation of the guardrail. Completion is anticipated by early October 2026.
Project background
Road safety improvements on Oallen Road between Nerriga Road and Ningee-Nimble Creek includes installation of safety barriers on roadside and other improvements at 11 sites for approximately 2.9km, replacing existing barriers, installing motorcycle underrun protection for approximately 3.5km and installing new safety barrier end terminals at 44 locations, improving safety for all road users.
The Road Safety Program is a jointly funded by the Australian Government and the NSW Government to deliver road safety upgrades and improvements through infrastructure projects across NSW. One of the objectives in the Road Safety Plan is creating safer country roads by installing full median and roadside barriers, treatments such as rumble strips, wide centrelines and speed zone reviews, noting three-quarters of deaths on high-speed country roads involve vehicles leaving its path.
Guardrail sites
Site 1 - 2.5km west of Nerriga Road - 200m guard rail on right hand side.
Site 2 - East of Corang River Bridge - 670m guard rail on the right side and remove and replace 60m of existing guardrail on the left side.
Site 3 - West of Corang River Bridge - 170m guard rail on left hand side.
Site 4 - 4.6km west of Nerriga Road - 100m guard rail on both sides of road (200m).
Site 5 - 4.9km west of Nerriga Road - 280m guard rail on left hand side and 100m on right hand side.
Site 6 - 5.7km west of Nerriga Road - Remove and replace existing 100m guard rail on both sides.
Site 7 - 5.9km west of Nerriga Road - 210m guard rail on both sides of road.
Site 8 - 6.5km west of Nerriga Road - 100m guard rail on left hand side of road and 280m guard rail on right hand side near Welcome Reef Road.
Site 9 - At Welcome Reef Road - 80m on left hand side and 230m on right hand side of road.
Site 10 - 7.7km west of Nerriga Road - 140m on right hand side of road and 80m on left hand side of road.
Site 11 - 8km west of Nerriga Road - 115m guard rail on right hand side of road and 175m guard rail on left hand side
Motorcycle safety barriers will be added along the entire length of all new and existing barriers. Additionally, protective end terminals will be installed at the ends of all guard rails between Site 1 and Site 11.

What about improvements to Oallen Road itself?
We conducted a significant road rehabilitation to 7.6km of Oallen Road in two sections in 2024-25. These works included pavement rehabilitation, two coat seal, line marking, signage and some safety barriers installation.
