Reminder to Dog Owners: Keep Dogs Under Effective Control
Council is reminding dog owners of their responsibility to keep dogs under effective control when in public places.
Throughout the month of September, council will be targeting the following locations for off-leash infringements:
- Queanbeyan Showground - Glebe Ave
- Jerrabomberra Hill - Halloran Drive
A dog is under effective control when it is restrained by a competent person using an adequate chain, cord, or leash attached to the dog. Dogs that are not under effective control can cause distress to other residents, threaten wildlife, and create safety risks for pedestrians, cyclists, children, and other animals.
Council regularly receives complaints relating to roaming dogs, aggressive behaviour, and dogs approaching people or animals without restraint.
Under NSW legislation, fines may apply to owners who fail to keep their dogs under effective control in public areas.
Residents are encouraged to be responsible pet owners by ensuring dogs are properly restrained at all times unless in designated off-leash areas, and by complying with local signage and regulations.
Council appreciates the community’s cooperation in helping maintain safe and enjoyable public spaces for everyone.
This targeted campaign is conducted in line with the Companion Animals Act 1998.
