If you're thinking about celebrating Halloween this year, check out these tips from our waste team for a more sustainable spooky season.

See what you already own

If you don't have any costumes lying around use your imagination to pull something together! For example, if you want to be a witch, start by looking at your black clothing.

Reuse an old costume

Many of us have old Halloween costumes in a box somewhere. Why not reuse them? If you want to spice it up, you can alter, accessorise, or reimagine your costume to make it feel new again.

Alter items you don't use

Get crafty and see what you can create from items or accessories you don’t wear! If you have kids, this is a great way to make some budget costumes.

Make your accessories

Accessories like masks, headwear, and even jewellery, can often be made at home. Support your local craft store and get creative.

Make your own body paint

Does your spooky costume mean you need a sickly white skin? You can make your own body paint using common pantry items. There are some great recipes online that mean you can save money and reduce waste.

Host a costume swap

While you might not have a costume you can use, chances are one of your friends does! A fun way to be sustainable together is to host a costume exchange party. Everyone can bring old costumes or accessories and take turns swapping. This is a great way to find a free and eco-friendly costume.

DIY your costume with friends

If you're struggling to design your own costume host a DIY afternoon. Get your friends or family together and help each other create Halloween costumes. It's also a fun way to pool supplies and reduce the number of new items you'll need to buy this year.
